Q: What is sclerotherapy?

A: Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy

Some varicose veins and even some spider veins can be treated with a procedure called sclerotherapy. The Vein Guys® of Wisconsin offer two kinds of sclerotherapy. Low dose foam sclerotherapy and ultrasound guided sclerotherapy. Smaller varicose veins seen on the skins surface can be directly injected with a sclerosant, a drug solution that seals the enlarged vessel. The Vein Guys® may use a compact foam solution that fills the entire area of the vein. It is injected with the smallest needle possible to ensure patient comfort during the treatment.

Occasionally, patients present with deep saphenous tributaries below the skins surface. These veins may not be good candidates for radiofrequency ablations and our trained professionals may determine that the best treatment for these veins is ultrasound guided sclerotherapy. Under the guidance of ultrasound imaging (high frequency sound waves and their echoes used to create pictures of the inside of the body) a needle delivers a small dose of a sclerosant to shrink these veins.
