I am worried about a blood clot. Should I see a vein doctor?

Q: I bumped into my coffee table two weeks ago and hit a big vein on my left calf. My skin is red, swollen and very painful where the varicose vein is located. I am worried about a blood clot. Should I see a vein doctor?

A: Yes… you should have it looked at especially if the swelling and pain developed rapidly in the area around your varicose vein. Superficial Venous Thrombosis or SVT occurs on the surface of the skin. The varicose vein becomes red, feels warm and is very tender to the touch when a SVT has formed. Also keep in mind, the clotted vein feels like a hard cord under the skin may times, not soft like a normal vein. The Vein-Guys of Wisconsin can evaluate your leg and see if a SVT is causing the pain.
